Abstract

The arrival of large numbers of Americans in early twentieth-century Ireland represented a major culture shock for both the sailors and the locals. The combination of cultural, financial and, increasingly, political differences led to growing hostility towards the Americans, exacerbated by the relationships of young Irish women with US soldiers. For some of these young women, the US presence would forever change the course of their lives, as they took the decision to marry American sweethearts and leave their homes in Ireland to embark on a new life across the Atlantic.
