Abstract | During the last decades of the 20th century, most of the countries in the region introduced far-reaching constitutional reforms that, in some cases, brought their populations closer to neoliberal models, while, in others, they did the opposite by betting on new forms of socialism. However, in almost all of them, indigenous, Afro, and LGTBI social movements, among others, have shown that there are new citizens that deserve recognition and social, cultural, and political legitimacy. Without trying to evaluate here the results of such social experiments, which speak of a continent with countries that live increasingly complex realities, the truth is that the influence of mass media and new technologies has allowed that a greater number of people get connected in real time, but also an increasingly greater flow and access to information. Consequently, what once was perceived as a displacement of traditional media by social networks has actually meant a window of opportunity for these and other social and interest groups to establish a closer, almost intimate link with greater and varied audiences, making the barriers between online and offline life more diffuse and ethereal in practice. From different theoretical, methodological, and disciplinary approaches, the texts included in this book seek to give an answer to these new realities and social conflicts; for this reason, the unifying thread of the book lies in the complex and always unresolved equation between mass media, social conflicts, and the field of public opinion formation or construction.
