Abstract | In this book two stories are told. The first is a general history of internal warfare. Antonio Zapata tells, with historical rigor and narrative pulse, from the political germ that provoked the different splits of Peruvian communism in the sixties, until the final collapse of the Shining Path with the capture of Guzmán. To do so, it focuses mainly on those who made the main decisions, the armed actors: on the one hand the Armed Forces and the National Police, through their institutional or informal memories, and on the other Shining Path, through testimonies until now unpublished. your ringleaders Here is the second story: the war seen from the eyes of Elena Yparraguirre. If Guzmán was the ideologist of Sendero, Yparraguirre was the organizer: a hard and efficient woman who organized the closest that Peru had to a killing machine. Without it, "Sendero would have been less lethal," says Zapata, who in order to carry out this investigation met 21 times with number 3 of the Shining Path in the Chorrillos Women's Prison.
