Abstract

Although social history had gained a decisive place in general historical scholarship and had produced many new findings for almost all periods, the "military" factor had long been largely ignored by social historians. Especially for the early modern period, this exclusion had been regrettable, since research on the standing armies of the 17th and 18th centuries is indispensable for further understanding of absolutism. With his dissertation completed in 1992, the author closed this research gap. With the analysis of an until then largely unknown stock of sources, he succeeded in creating a comprehensive sociogram of the early modern garrison and fortress city of Göttingen. With this close-to-source field study, he impressively describes not only the internal structure of the Electorate of Hanover's military, but also illuminates the mutual relationship between citizens and soldiers living together in close quarters.
