Abstract

The contemporary Soviet military has been analyzed by some as a military institution and by others as a political institution. In this volume, the author examines the Soviet military as a social institution. This study isolates those features of the Soviet military manpower system that reflect factors unique to the Soviet system and those that derive from requirements common to armies in industrialized states. This investigation of Soviet military personnel provides a window through which we can observe the broader military system at work: how that system affects and, in turn, is affected by the economic, social, and political life of the country. This volume contributes to the academic understanding of both civil-military relations in communist systems and knowledge of Soviet politics. [from author]
