Abstract

This book chapter in the 2011 edited German volume Soldatinnen: Gewalt und Geschlecht im Krieg vom Mittelalter bis heute (Female Soldiers: Violence and Gender in War from the Middle Ages to the Present) discusses the small number  of cross-dressed female soldiers in seventeenth and eighteenth century European armies, their social background and their perception by the contemporaries. "Amazones" were a quite popular subject in poems,  plays and other texts of the time, but the real live of these women was often far less romantic and adventurous.
