Abstract

This book offers another look toward the Algerian War by presenting the history of the Service for the Training of Young Algerians (SFJA), created in 1958. A hybrid civil-military organization, its role was to take charge of the general and preprofessional education of illiterate young people. Its teams of instructors were among the first women sent to a combat zone to interact with civilians and the military. The SFJA had a unique experience in the context of counterinsurgency, and this book articulates its history by way of a collective biography of its ex-instructors.
