Abstract

The body of the book consists of a prologue (a straightforward account of Vietnamese history until the end of World War II) and eleven chronological chapters, each covering a year or two of American participation in the war. The bulk of each chapter is a parade of short quotations by eyewitnesses and participants - American presidents and North Vietnamese leaders; generals, foot soldiers, senators, and peace activists; everyday Americans and members of the cabinet; journalists, POWs, medics, pilots, and parents back home.
