Marie Antoinette (1774–92), born Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna, was the last queen of France. She was born an Archduchess of Austria and the penultimate child and youngest daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor. Her name is synonymous with the French monarchy and all its excesses, but there is more to her story than the simplistic tale of how a foreign sovereign helped provoke the French Revolution. This film traces her journey from the splendors of a childhood in the mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire to her final hours in a French prison cell and finally to the guillotine.
