Abstract

Approximately 400.000 Soviet soldiers liberated Austria and Vienna in 1944/45. In the fall of 1945 the Soviet personal in Austria  was reduced to 180.000 to 200.000 people. Ten years later, still 40.000 Soviet soldiers, 7.600 members of officer families and 2.400 workers lived in Austria. This book chapter in the edited volume Die Rote Armee in Österreich: Sowjetische Besatzung 1945-1955. Beiträge (Austria: Soviet Occupation 1945-1955. Scholarly Contributions) explores the  spectrum of the relations between Soviet soldiers and Austrian women, including sexual violence.
