Abstract

This article discusses the development of the folklore of popular military culture as illustrated in the popular enthusiasm for the army displayed during military celebrations and parades and in the publicizing activities of civil/military associations in France and Germany in the late 19th century. Folkloric militarism helped the general populace accept the increased role of the military in their countries.
