Abstract | This volume studies how literature both reflected and contributed to the eclipse and subsequent revival of militarism in the nineteenth century. Focusing on four major disputes--in the Crimea, India, the Sudan and South Africa--as well as the role of the army in Britain, the author examines how a succession of writers, as well as war reporters and participants in conflicts, responded to military issues. At the center of the book is the Victorian dilemma of how to reconcile a policy of imperial aggression with liberal domestic values. |
