Abstract | Challenges the assumption that during World War I few soldiers in the British Expeditionary Force had sexual relations or formed romantic attachments with local women in France and Belgium. Uses diaries and letters by soldiers as testimony to the relationships that formed as well as official records of efforts to document and contain the spread of venereal disease. |
