Abstract

Only a few years ago, the study of music in dictatorial state systems was a marginal area of musicological work. In the meantime, this area has developed into an established field of activity. In musicology there still seems to be a disproportion between a great interest in the research field 'music in dictatorships' on the one hand and an equally great uncertainty on the other hand, how to deal with the collected results, if one does not want to place them unconnected anthologically and uncommented next to each other. This prompted the editors to make a renewed attempt to take a joint look at music in fascist and socialist dictatorships and to discuss in the context of an international symposium with renowned specialists from different fields in which form comparative research on dictatorships could be possible in the future. Different areas will be examined: National Socialism, Italian Fascism, Franco's regime, the GDR, the Soviet Union and the PR China at the time of the Cultural Revolution.
