Abstract

This was the first time in history that the destiny of a generation of composers and performers played out not in recitals or other concerts but on the battlefield. But does art have a place in such a butchery? For four long years, these young men, some older - even women - whether German, English, French, Belgian, Austrian, Australian... lived in hell. Some died, others were psychologically wounded and would do nothing more, some lost their hands, their eyes, became deaf...
The author uses a lot of unpublished documents and photos, many excerpts from personal diaries and letters which make this testimonial book very rich. The different battles are clearly and briefly described.
