This volume gathers papers presented at the 119th and 121st National Congresses of Historical and Scientific Societies in Amiens and Nice, 1994 and 1996. First, papers focus on the human, material, and moral mobilization of France at war in the Revolution and the Empire--from the southeastern frontiers to the northern plains, from Mediterranean port cities to the Swiss and Piedmontese frontiers. The study of national defense is rich with insights into the sacrifices accepted especially in Normandy, Picardy and Alsace, accompanied with a series of investigations on the war itself: revolutionary war, war of "subversion" on the established order, propaganda war and also war of expansion and domination against which the populations reacted. Other contributions bring to new light images of war provided by travelers and geographers, on the discourses surrounding war and on the rights of people by diplomats, deputies of the First Republic or by Bonaparte, whose proclamations are revisited by a digital study. A collection of works which therefore enriches the history known as "military" which really presents itself here, as it should, as a global history.
