Abstract

With conscription, the army of Germany in the nineteenth century had not only become a "school of the nation" but also a "school of masculinity." This sense of the military's training goals was formulated in the speeches of pedagogues and politicians from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The mission elicited a favorable response from military officers in the nineteenth century. There was no agreement, however, on the specific content of the training curriculum. The development followed that of internal transformations in the army and those of the place of the military in society.
