Abstract

The war of 1870/71 occupies an unsettled position in research. For a long time, it was regarded as the last cabinet war in the classical sense. It was not until the last decades of the 20th century that researchers began to focus more intensively on the Franco-Prussian War and on a new classification of the "War of Imperial Unification" in its historical context. Was it still a cabinet war or already an industrialized people's war or even a first step towards a modern war of extermination? On the basis of a large number of newly acquired facts from sources, some of which have not yet been collected, the author succeeds in putting the Franco-German war into a new perspective in a large-scale analysis. His sometimes surprising findings show that the war had a far deeper impact on the German economy and society than was previously known. [Publisher]
