Abstract

A chronological narrative of the life of Scottish suffragist and medical doctor, Elsie Inglis (1864-1917), and her role in founding the Scottish Women's Hospitals (SWH) in 1914 and leading it during World War I until her death in 1917. The SWH provided nurses, doctors, ambulance drivers, cooks and orderlies. By the end of the war 14 medical units had been outfitted and sent to serve in Corsica, France, Malta, Romania, Russia, Salonika and Serbia. Leneman gathered committee papers, diaries, letters, memoirs, and interviews of the doctors and support staff to give this account, including details on the personality clashes of the personnel.
