Abstract | This chapter explores the inclusion of women in the American Armed Forces since the Second World War and the struggle of women to achieve an equal place in the military. They replaced male soldiers, did their jobs, but were themselves not recognized as soldiers, only as auxiliaries. This only changed slowly since the 1970s, when in 1973 the US Armed Forces became a professional army. The chapter also discusses the struggle in the military, politics and society over the equal access of women to combat positions inside the US Armed Forces. |
