Abstract

Famously, the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia was prompted by a series of escalating strikes that had begun with women's bread demonstrations on International Women's Day in 1917. This article examines the phenomenon of food riots in Russia during the First World War, tracing the increasing politicization and antiwar nature of the riots through the course of the war.
