Abstract

The First World War was also women's business. They mobilized themselves, took positions, experienced fear. As Michelle Pierrot writes in the preface, men, stuck on the front, "feared being cheated, usurped, reversed by these women who, in the rear, penetrated the secrets of their businesses and trades. They were scared of being dominated, possessed by those who cared for them as children." This book, one of the first to have thought of war from the point of view of women, is a striking account of what changed and what did not change at the heart of French society between 1914 and 1918.
