Abstract

An example of New German cinema, this film offers a feminist perspective on the historical memory of Nazi Germany through the relationship between mother and child. Anna imagines her mother's life in three distinct stages of her marriage before, during, and after World War II. Lene's resilience, adaptation, and ambivalence mirror that of ordinary Germans, which prompted criticism of the film upon its release.
