Abstract

Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 American war film that portrays the Normandy (D-Day) landings and  its immediate aftermath. Directed by Steven Spielberg it stars Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, and Tom Sizemore, won five Oscars and went on to become an iconic American war film. The film follows United States Army Rangers Captain John H. Miller and his squad as they search for a paratrooper, Private First Class James Francis Ryan, the last surviving brother of three servicemen killed in action. Surrounded by the brutal realties of war, while searching for Ryan, each man embarks upon a personal journey and discovers their own strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage. Spielberg won Best Oscar at the 1999 Academic Awards. In 2014, the film was selected by the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for preservation for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
