Abstract

Visually styled as a post-war film noir, The Good German, based on a novel by Joseph Kanon and directed by Steven Soderbergh, explores corruption, immorality, and compromise in post-World War II Berlin. American war correspondent Jake Geismar arrives in Berlin to cover the Potsdam Conference and reunite with his old flame, Lena. His attention soon turns to unraveling two murder mysteries connected to Lena.. His investigation uncovers the U.S. Army's secret mission to recruit German scientists involved with perpetrating the Holocaust. Fast-paced but nuanced, Soderbergh’s classic film explores the aftermath of war and the many wrenching dilemmas faced by its survivors.
