Abstract

Mildred Aldrich (1853–1928) was an American journalist and writer. In 1898, she moved to France, and in 1914 bought a house that overlooked the Marne river valley. This book is based on her journal entries and on letters she wrote to her friend, Gertrude Stein (1874–1946), detailing her experiences during the First Battle of the Marne. Aldrich published further letter editions about her experiences in World War I: On the Edge of the War Zone (1917), The Peak of the Load (1918) and When Johnny Comes Marching Home (1919).
