Abstract | In this semi-autobiographical tale, a group of women and their Italian ward find their refuge in Florence endangered by World War II. Known locally as the Scorpioni, these British and American expatriates surround themselves with art and luxury and collectively provide guardianship to the young Luca. When war occurs, the Jewish-American woman pays for their internment in a hotel, but she, too, becomes a target of a manipulative Italian lawyer and the Gestapo. Luca joins the Resistance and helps save the women who raised him. |
