Abstract

In letters, diary entries and photographs, the war experiences of Helen Bulovsky, a family heroine, are recorded. Unexpectedly found by her two nieces, these collections, sequestered and forgotten, in two different households, come together now with a broader perspective on the people and places that she experiences. From it we have a first-hand account of nursing on the front lines during the fighting in France and Belgium during World War I. Included in this collection are letters from officials and friends, Helen's clever songs and poems, and her own narrative.
