Abstract

My Long March - Eleven Women's Quest for Freedom tells the personal experiences of 11 women who went on a circuitous retreat of some 12, 500 kilometres across China to escape the invading Kuomintang forces. In all, some 100,000 people set out from their camps and homes in south-eastern Jiangxi Province in October 1934. The journey, which took the lives of tens of thousands, finally ended a year later at Shaanxi Province in the north. The women featured in this book, all recruits in the Red Army, recount the hardships they endured traversing mountainous terrain, and coping with disease and hunger. These timely interviews are a poignant tribute to the women's courage and perseverance in the face of tremendous difficulties.
