Based on the 1940 novel of the same title by Ernest Hemingway, this film follows a volunteer of the American International Brigade who sacrifices his life for the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). Tasked with blowing up a strategic bridge, Robert Jordan runs into resistance from guerilla fighters. Their leader believes Jordan's mission will only endanger his group. Maria and other guerillas, however, agree to help. Though successful, Jordan sacrifices himself to let Maria, the woman he loves, escape.
