Abstract

Based on a 1984 Spanish play of the same title by Fernando Fernán Gómez, this film deals with the traumatic effects of Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) on citizens of Madrid, particularly one Republican family. The film's focus on daily life, such as a child's desire for a bicycle and abandoning his dreams of becoming a writer, shows how ordinary people adapted and survived in Franco's Spain.
