Abstract | From 1943 to 1946, Henderson Hall in Arlington, VA, had the distinction of being the only Marine base compound made up entirely of women Marines, including a female commanding officer. In 1944, Nona Johnson enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve and left Wayne, Nebraska to serve her country. After boot camp at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, she was stationed at Henderson Hall from 1944 through 1946. This is the story of Nona's life as a Women's Marine Corporal, on-duty at the U.S. Marine Corps headquarters and off-duty in the barracks. |
