Abstract

Mourning Becomes Electra is a 1947 American drama film by Dudley Nichols, adapted from the 1931 Eugene O'Neill play of the same title. Following the American Civil War (1861–1865), the Mannons, a wealthy New England family, await the return of patriarch Ezra, general for the Union army, and son Orin, who served as Army officer. Lavinia Mannon discovers shocking family secrets while her father and brother are at war. Upon their return, tragedy befalls the entire Mannon family.
