Abstract

In this visually creative film noir, an American mercenary and a young woman must navigate shifting allegiances during the Chinese Civil War (1927–1950). On a train to Shanghai, O'Hara and Judy Perrie meet. He is arranging to smuggle arms to peasants and authorities in a province controlled by a warlord, while her goal is to stop his mission and protect her father's interests in that province. The main character, O'Hara, is based on the real-life Anglo-Canadian Jewish adventurer Morris Abraham "Two-Gun" Cohen (1887–1970). During the early 1930s, Cohen ran guns for various warlords in mainland China.
