An innocent and enigmatic young American economist (Audie Murphy) and an embittered and cynical English journalist (Michael Redgrave) are both involved with a young Vietnamese woman (Giorgia Moll). Although the original novel was a critique of foreign intervention and American exceptionalism, Mankiewicz’s film focused on the love triangle between the three main characters and turned the story into an anti-communist murder mystery that championed American power, which led Greene to disavow this adaptation as “propaganda.”
