Abstract | Adapted from Edmond Rostand's 1897 play of the same title, this is the tragic story of wordsmith and swordsman Cyrano de Bergerac (1619–1655), a French aristocrat-turned-soldier during the Franco-Spanish War (1635-1659). Cyrano falls in love with his cousin Roxanne, but he supports her when she declares her love for Christian de Neuvillette, a handsome new cadet. Sent off to war with him, Cyrano writes love letters for Christian to Roxanne. This film was remade in 1990 and released under the same title. |
