A group of young Marines go from training to battle under the leadership of Sergeant Stryker during World War II. Sands of Iwo Jima was one of the first Hollywood films to present the war through realism. The dramatization of the iconic and important Pacific Theater battle is interspersed with newsreel footage, and technical advice from and participation of the U.S. Marine Corp also enhance the film's realism.
