Abstract

How did the First World War change the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of workers in Czech factories? What new meanings did the basic aspects of human life acquire in the environment of acute material deprivation, such as where, how and what to eat or in what conditions and with whom to work? How did total war transform the organized workers' collective? The book follows these and similar issues in four basic spheres of wartime working life: in the sphere of food consumption, industrial work, gender relations and social protests, which became more and more common colors of most Czech cities as the war progressed.
