Abstract

Before and after the Allied invasion of Normandy in World War II, a group of French rail workers commit everyday acts of resistance and eventually sabotage the German-controlled rail system. Director René Clément used non-professional actors and a documentary style to enhance the ordinary struggles of French citizens, whose real-life stories provided the film's narrative.
