Abstract

In the wartime winter of 1941/42, Swiss doctors Ernst Baumann and Hubert de Reynier travel from Bern to Smolensk together with the participants of the first Swiss medical mission, including nurses, secretaries and drivers. As part of this "relief action" under the "patronage of the Red Cross", they make a Swiss humanitarian contribution to Hitler's war in the military hospitals of Smolensk in order to dissuade the dictator from his intentions to attack their country. As members of a neutral state, they experience the everyday life of the civilian population and prisoners of war in the part of the Soviet Union occupied by the German military. They gain insight into the horrific reality of war: the suffering and dying in the wards of field hospitals and war hospitals. They engage themselves to the point of physical and mental exhaustion. In the course of their deployment, they have to cope with the tremendous onslaught of severely wounded and dying people after the catastrophe outside Moscow.
