Abstract

Pétain recounts the creation of Vichy France, its leaders complicity with Nazi Germany, and their persecution of Jews during World War II. A narrative focus on Marshall Phillipe Pétain (1856-1951), a celebrated veteran of World War I who becomes Chief of State, centers the film as it explores the effects of his government on ordinary people. Critics noted that the film offered a rebuttal to then Prime Minister François Miterrand's refusal to acknowledge his nation's dark past.
