Abstract

This film noir reveals the decadence and decay of France following its liberation in World War II. Robert, a resistance fighter, falls in love with Manon, a suspected Nazi collaborator, in the final days of occupied France. Her amoral character and desire for the good life corrupt him, leading him to a life of crime and murder. Their flight from Paris leads to more tragedy, pitted against the backdrop of a group of Jews trying to cross into Palestine. The film is a loose adaptation of the 1731 novel Manon Lescaut by Abbé Prévost.
