Abstract | Actor Kenneth Griffith provides a dramatic monologue of the life of Michael Collins (1890-1922), a prominent leader during the Irish War for Independence (1919-1923). Although usually classed as a documentary, the film more closely resembles a dramatic monologue, with Griffith frequently delivering quotes by key figures such as David Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, and Collins himself, "in character". Given its pro-Irish content and its release in the midst of the Irish Troubles (1968-1998), the Incorporated Television Company refused to broadcast the film. The film had a limited release in 1973, and was first broadcast on BBC One in Wales only in 1993, and networked across the United Kingdom by BBC Two the following year. |
