The Howards of Virginia is a 1940 American film directed by Frank Lloyd, and based on the book The Tree of Liberty written by Elizabeth Page. A young man from colonial Virginia fulfills his father's dream of moving West at the dawn of the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). On his way west, Matt Howard meets Tom, who passes him off as a member of the landed gentry to the Peyton family. Howard falls in love with and marries Jane, but his deception as well as their political and ideological differences disrupt their union.
