Abstract

This Vichy-era film celebrates maternalism, traditional values, and a homogenous French identity. After Louise loses her husband and her newborn child during World War I, she dedicates her life to caring for other children and following her Catholic faith. The film's rejection of modernity and feminism coupled with its erasure of Jews from French life corresponded with General Marshal Philippe Pétain's "National Revolution."
