Abstract | This project, created by the Brown University Library Center for Digital Scholarship, offers users access to thousands of prints, drawings, and watercolors from the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection. Concentrating on the period from the 17th century to World War II, it has a particular emphasis on illustrations of military uniforms and dress, as well as portraits, photographs, posters, and other materials. All are accessible both via a thematic browsing capacity, basic search, and a multi-term advanced search function. The collection is based on its founder's collection, which was donated to the library, which began to be accumulated in the mid-twentieth century. It includes, in addition to the thousands of books, albums, and sketches, some 6,000 miniature lead soldiers. It includes materials collected after World War II from Germany, Russia, Britain, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. In addition to Europe, some materials relate to the British Empire, especially India, as well as Japan. |
