Based on the memoirs of Lt. Cpl. Anthony Swofford, Jarhead reveals the monotony of war as experienced by U.S. Marines in the Gulf War. From basic training to Iraq, Swofford and his peers perpetually train for war. Their boredom and frustration coupled with the Arabian Peninsula's intense heat lead to inappropriate shenanigans, reminisces of home, and, for some, mental breakdowns. The film's focus on aimless Marines mirrors the general confusion and seemingly purposeless nature of the war itself.
