Abstract

Hunger offers an uncompromising and brutal portrait of the 1981 Irish Hunger Strike that speaks to larger issues of prisoners' rights. Prisoners in Northern Ireland's Maze prison launch a seven-month strike to win status as political prisoners, which the British government had revoked for Irish Republican Army members during the Troubles. The film focuses on Bobby Sands, but it also documents the no-wash strike as well as guards beating and sodomizing prisoners.
