Abstract | Based on the 1941 novel of the same title by Pearl S. Buck, China Sky focuses on American missionary doctors in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945). An American mission hospital is headed up by Dr. Gray Thompson (Randolph Scott) and Dr. Sara Durand (Ruth Warrick). Sara is secretly in love with Gray, but hides her feelings as his new wife, Louise (Ellen Drew), arrives at the hospital. Sparks fly, however, when Louise becomes jealous of Sara, and then tries to convince her husband to leave war-torn China behind for a calmer life in the United States. But Thompson is attached to both Sara and the people who need his help. Released at the end of World War II, China Sky did represent an attempt to portray the Chinese theatre of operations, but despite the game efforts of its stars, was relegated to "B" fare by its low production values. |
