Abstract

This internationally acclaimed, Oscar-nominated documentary explores the immediate and long-term effects of nuclear warfare by looking at the U.S. military test at Bikini Atoll. In the summer of 1946, the U.S. military tested the nuclear bomb to assert its new world power and awareness of its responsibility. Testimonies from survivors, including Chief Kilon Bauno and former Navy pilot John Smitherman, demonstrate the horrors of radioactivity, while military footage and records show both American naivety and callousness toward the experiments. Radio Bikini was aired on TV as part of the the PBS series The American Experience.
